The Woman Who Stood Up to *CANCER* | She is a Conqueror | Ep. 12

Today on She is…” I sit down with Jo Jo Hristova, an actress, dancer, and professional puppeteer who in 2014 was diagnosed with Glioblastoma multiform grade 4, the most aggressive brain cancer.

Jo Jo Hristova was born and raised in Bulgaria. After being a dancer and a professional puppeteer in Sofia she moved to the States to pursue acting career. Little did she know that a life changing surprise was awaiting for her there. At the spring of 2014 she was diagnosed with Glioblastoma multiform grade 4, the most aggressive brain cancer. Jo Jo was ready to face the challenge. She firmly believes that the power of self-love and faith will cure her. She doesn’t like the term “battle with cancer” since it bring feelings of aggravation. Instead, she loves her cancer deeply and uses the sentence “I’m in a search for a cure for my cancer”. Rather than feeling scared she repeats daily healing affirmations and brings herself to a full state of believe that they are true now. She knows that this is a test of a lifetime and she is more than ready to pass it.

Baghdad Stories: An Iraqi-American Memoir | Ep. 11

Today on She is I sit down with Nadia Al Sultani, the author of Baghdad Stories, who shares with me why as an Iraqi-American she was compelled to write the book and how the ongoing traumas in Iraq have shaped her life.

Nadia Al Sultani was born in Baghdad, Iraq

At age ten she moves with her family to America and since she was caught in two symbolic currents- The East and The West

She has taken series of journeys back to Iraq to find her place and the sense of who she is.

Her book Baghdad Stories focusses on three trips that Nadia has made back to Iraq between 2001 and 2014.

Her first journey was during Saddam’s dictatorship. The second after the war when she travels to the Green Zone as a high-ranking consultant for the United States Agency for International Development helping to restore Iraq’s economy and infrastructure.

And the third, most recent and highly charged visit was in 2014 despite the rising terrorism and immediate threats.
